How Much Flagstone Do I Need?

Flagstone pieces in a buckskin color

Flagstone is usually sold by the ton or by the pallet, and how far it goes depends mostly on how thick the stone is. For patio flagstone, one ton covers roughly 80 to 120 square feet. Thinner patio-gauge stone covers toward the high end, thicker standup stone toward the low end. Measure your area, plan your joint spacing, and add about 10 percent for cuts and breakage. Thickness is the variable that moves your tonnage the most.

Thickness changes everything

Two flagstone patios of the same size can need noticeably different tonnage based on stone thickness:

  • Patio gauge: thinner stone meant for a finished patio surface set over a base. It is lighter per square foot, so a ton covers more area, toward the 120 square foot end.
  • Standup stone: thicker, heavier stone used where you want more durability or a chunkier look. Because it weighs more per square foot, a ton covers less area, toward the 80 square foot end.

If you are unsure which gauge a project calls for, our walkthrough on how to build a flagstone patio covers the base and setting steps that go with each.

The simple method

  • Measure the area. Length times width in feet gives square footage. Break irregular patios into rectangles and add them up.
  • Plan your joints. Flagstone is laid with gaps between stones, which you fill later with sand or a planting mix. Wider joints mean fewer stones cover the same footprint, so a relaxed, wide-joint layout stretches your material a little further than tight joints.
  • Convert to tons. Divide your square footage by the coverage range for your thickness: about 80 square feet per ton for thick stone, up to about 120 for thin patio stone.
  • Add for cuts and breakage. Flagstone gets cut to fit and the occasional piece breaks, so add about 10 percent on top of your calculated tonnage.

A worked example

Imagine a front-entry patio, 10 feet by 10 feet, laid in patio-gauge flagstone with normal joints.

  • Area: 10 times 10 equals 100 square feet.
  • Coverage: patio-gauge stone at about 110 square feet per ton, so 100 divided by 110 is a little under 1 ton.
  • Cuts and breakage: add about 10 percent, which brings it back up to right around 1 ton.

If you went with thicker standup stone instead, at roughly 90 square feet per ton, the same 100 square foot patio would need closer to 1.1 tons before the breakage allowance. The coverage calculator works out the exact figure for your area once you know the thickness you are buying.

Flagstone or steppers

For a full patio surface, flagstone laid tight is the usual choice. If you only want a stepping path across a lawn or bed, you do not need full coverage. Individual steppers set with planted gaps use far less stone, and you size them by counting steps rather than covering an area. Browse flagstone to compare colors and thicknesses before you settle on a tonnage.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a ton of flagstone cover?

For patio flagstone, roughly 80 to 120 square feet per ton. Thinner patio-gauge stone covers toward the high end; thicker standup stone is heavier per square foot and covers toward the low end.

Is flagstone sold by the ton or the pallet?

Both are common. Flagstone is usually sold by the ton or by the pallet. Either way, you size the order from your patio square footage and the stone thickness.

How much extra flagstone should I order?

Add about 10 percent over your calculated tonnage for cuts and breakage. Flagstone gets trimmed to fit and the odd piece breaks, so the extra keeps you from running short mid-project.

Does joint spacing change how much I need?

Yes. Wider joints between stones mean fewer stones cover the same footprint, which stretches your material slightly. Tight joints use a little more stone per square foot.

What is the difference between patio and standup flagstone?

Patio gauge is thinner stone for a finished patio surface, so a ton covers more area. Standup stone is thicker and heavier for durability or a chunkier look, so a ton covers less area.
