Common Uses for Water Features

From pondless bubblers to garden fountains and stone basins, see where a water feature fits in a landscape.

Pondless Bubblers

Pondless Bubblers

A pondless bubbler runs water up through a stone column or boulder and lets it disappear into a buried basin below. There is no open pond to maintain and nothing for kids or pets to fall into. The sound of moving water carries across a small garden without taking up much space.

Garden Fountains

Garden Fountains

A standing fountain gives a patio or courtyard a clear focal point and a steady, soothing sound. Basalt column fountains read clean and modern, while carved stone pieces feel more traditional. Set one near seating so you actually hear the water.

Bird Baths & Basins

Bird Baths & Basins

A carved stone basin or boulder dish holds a shallow pool of water for birds and adds a quiet natural accent to a bed. The stone weathers slowly and stays put through the seasons. Pair it with low plantings and a few accent boulders for a settled look.

Patio Water Accents

Patio Water Accents

A compact bubbler or tabletop piece brings the sound of water to a deck, patio, or entry without a full feature build. These smaller accents plug into a pump and a small reservoir, so they work in tight spaces. Place one near a door or seating area where people gather.

Water Features Buying Guide

Pick the right feature, learn setup and care, and find the look that works for your landscape.

Water features bring the sound and movement of water into a garden, from pondless bubblers to standing fountains and carved stone basins. Most are low-maintenance and run on a recirculating pump, so the same water cycles through over and over.

Browse the full water features collection across every style. Not sure which fits your space? The table below pairs each feature type with the projects it does best.

Water Feature Types vs Use

FeatureBest ForSetupCareCost
Pondless Bubbler Small gardens, entries, low-maintenance sound Pump + buried basin Low $$
Basalt Column Fountain Modern patios, courtyards, focal points Pump + basin or reservoir Low to moderate $$$
Bird Bath Dish Beds, natural accents, birds and wildlife Set in place, fill by hand Low $$
Tabletop Bubbler Decks, entries, tight spaces Pump + small reservoir Low $$
Pair a feature with basalt columns and accent boulders so it reads as part of the landscape.

What Designers Know

  • Use a buried basin and pump for a pondless feature. The water runs up through the stone and disappears into a hidden reservoir below grade, so there is no open pond to clean or fence off.
  • Top up the water in summer. Evaporation drops the level in the basin over hot weeks. Check it and refill so the pump always stays submerged.
  • Winterize the pump in freezing areas. Drain the basin and pull the pump before a hard freeze so ice does not crack the stone or damage the pump.
  • Fill the basin with decorative pebbles. A layer of smooth pebbles over the reservoir grate hides the hardware and finishes the feature with a clean, natural surface.
  • Place the feature near seating. The whole point is the sound, so set the bubbler or fountain where people gather. Too far from a patio or door and you lose the effect.
  • Ask about pump size and power. Each piece needs a pump matched to its height and flow, plus a nearby outlet. Call us with the feature and your setup so we can point you to the right pump.

FAQ

A pondless feature runs water through a stone into a buried basin, so there is no open pond to maintain and nothing to fall into. A pond fountain sits in or beside an open body of water. Most homeowners choose pondless for the lower maintenance and safety. Browse the water features collection to compare.
A basalt column is drilled top to bottom, stood upright over a buried basin, and a pump pushes water up through the center. The water spills down the face and drains back into the basin to recirculate. The basalt columns collection has the stones used for this.
Plan on topping up the water as it evaporates, rinsing the basin and pump a couple of times a year, and draining the system before a hard freeze. A pondless feature is the lowest-maintenance option since there is no open pond to manage.
Yes. Each feature uses a pump that needs a nearby outlet, ideally a GFCI-protected one. For a clean install, many homeowners have an electrician run a dedicated outlet to the feature location before setup.
Stone water features are heavy, so they ship by freight and often need equipment to place. We can deliver to your site and help coordinate setup. Call (800) 215-7372 with the piece and your location and we will walk you through delivery and placement.
