Common Uses for Pavers

From patios to driveways to pool decks — hardscape that flexes with the ground and lasts decades.

Patios & Outdoor Living

Patios & Outdoor Living

Pavers make a level, hard-surface patio that holds furniture, BBQs, and foot traffic without the cracking and movement of poured concrete. Wide range of colors and patterns lets the patio match the house instead of fighting it.

Driveways & Auto Surfaces

Driveways & Auto Surfaces

Driveway-rated pavers handle car weight better than asphalt or concrete because individual stones flex with the ground and let water drain through the joints. Permeable patterns now qualify for stormwater compliance in many California jurisdictions.

Walkways & Garden Paths

Walkways & Garden Paths

Wider pavers (12" or 18" stepping pieces) set in pea gravel or decomposed granite create a defined path that's softer than full coverage. Casual, comfortable, easy to extend or change.

Pool Decks

Pool Decks

Pool-rated pavers stay cool underfoot in light colors, drain freely through the joints, and don't get slick when wet — three properties most other decking materials fight. Brushed finishes give grip without abrasion.

Outdoor Kitchens & Fire Areas

Outdoor Kitchens & Fire Areas

Hardscape pads under built-in grills, pizza ovens, and fire pits give a stable, fire-safe surface that can take grease drips and accidental embers. Pick a color that ties the cooking zone to the rest of the patio.

Retaining Wall Caps & Borders

Retaining Wall Caps & Borders

Smooth or tumbled paver units cap retaining walls, edge raised beds, and define hardscape borders. Same product line as the wall blocks for a coordinated look — different thickness for the cap.

Pavers Buying Guide

Pick the right thickness, prep the base, and install with restraint. Hardscape that flexes and lasts.

Pavers are the most flexible hardscape material we carry — individual stones set over a compacted base, with sand-filled joints that let water drain through and individual pieces flex with the ground. Patio thickness for foot traffic, driveway thickness for cars, permeable patterns for stormwater compliance.

Paver Types vs Applications

MaterialBest ForCompactionDrainageCost
Patio Pavers (60mm / 2-3/8") Patios, walkways, foot traffic Set in sand Permeable joints $$
Driveway Pavers (80mm / 3-1/8") Driveways, vehicle traffic, heavy load areas Set in sand on compacted base Permeable joints $$$
Permeable Pavers Stormwater compliance, eco-friendly driveways Set on open-graded base Excellent (full drainage) $$$
Tumbled / Antique Pavers Old-world patios, Mediterranean & rustic styles Set in sand Permeable joints $$$
All pavers need a properly compacted base and edge restraint. See base materials for what goes underneath.

What Hardscape Contractors Know

  • Compact your base in lifts. Pour and compact the base in 2" layers, not all at once. A 4" base is two passes; a 6" base is three. Skip the lifts and the base settles unevenly in year one.
  • Always include edge restraint. Steel, concrete, or proprietary plastic edging holds the perimeter pavers in place. Without it, the field walks itself outward over time.
  • Polymeric sand is worth the upcharge. Standard joint sand washes out in rain and tracks in shoes. Polymeric sand sets up with the first watering and holds for years before refreshing.
  • Order 10% extra for cuts and waste. Patterns at edges and around obstacles always create cut waste. Standard contractor allowance is 10% overage on the square footage you measure.
  • Confirm thickness for the use case. 60mm (2-3/8") is patio rated only. Driveways need 80mm (3-1/8") to handle vehicle weight. Substituting patio thickness for driveways cracks the pavers within a few years.
  • Slope it for drainage. Plan 1/4" of fall per linear foot away from buildings. Water runs off, doesn't pool on the surface, and doesn't seep against foundations.

FAQ

By the square foot, in pallets of full pieces. The product pages show coverage per pallet. For most patios, plan one pallet per 100 sq ft after waste — but the exact number depends on the specific product. Call (800) 215-7372 with your dimensions for an accurate count.
Thickness. Patio pavers are typically 60mm (2-3/8"); driveway pavers are 80mm (3-1/8") to handle vehicle weight. Some products come in both thicknesses with the same face look. Always use driveway thickness under vehicles.
Small patios (under 200 sq ft) are within reach for a determined DIYer with a plate compactor rental and patience. Driveways and large installations are better left to a contractor — proper base prep and edge restraint are the difference between a 20-year install and a 5-year one.
With a properly compacted base and good edge restraint, paver patios easily go 25 to 40 years before they need significant refurbishment. Individual pavers can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the rest of the surface — a major advantage over poured concrete.
Coastal and inland valley California — no, you're well below the freeze-thaw threshold for concrete paver damage. Higher-elevation Sierra installations should specify products rated for freeze-thaw cycling; check the product spec sheet for ASTM C 67 compliance.
