Common Uses for Wall Rock

From retaining walls to dry-stack veneer and raised planters, see where natural stacking stone earns its place in a landscape.

Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Stack wall rock to hold back a slope, terrace a yard, or build a raised seating area. The flat, broken faces lock together course by course for a wall that stays put. Batter the wall back into the hill and provide drainage behind it for the long haul.

Freestanding Garden Walls

Freestanding Garden Walls

A low dry-stacked garden wall defines a bed, frames a patio, or doubles as casual seating. Wall rock dry-stacks without mortar for a natural, rustic look. Keep the heaviest stones in the base course and cap the top with flat stones for a clean finish.

Dry-Stack Veneer

Dry-Stack Veneer

Thin, flat wall rock faces a block wall, a foundation, or an outdoor kitchen base with the look of solid stone. Veneer-grade stone goes on without mortar joints showing for a tight dry-stack pattern. A small footprint of stone covers a large vertical face.

Raised Planters & Beds

Raised Planters & Beds

Wall rock builds a raised planter or bed wall that reads as natural stone instead of poured concrete. Stack a low ring around a tree or a vegetable bed for height and definition. The broken faces hold soil and water without the cost of a mortared wall.

Water Feature Surrounds

Water Feature Surrounds

Frame a pond, a waterfall, or a bubbler with stacked wall rock for a setting that looks like it grew there. The flat faces stack neatly around the basin and edge, and the stone holds its color when wet. Pair with boulders for scale and pebbles in the channel.

Accent & Feature Walls

Accent & Feature Walls

A short stretch of dry-stacked wall rock makes a focal point at an entry, a fire pit surround, or the base of a sign. Use it where you want texture and natural color without building a full retaining wall. A little stone goes a long way as an accent.

Wall Rock Buying Guide

Pick the right tier and stone, learn how to stack and drain a wall, and find the look that works for your landscape.

Wall rock is flat, broken stacking stone built for retaining walls, garden walls, raised planters, and dry-stack veneer. The broken faces lock together course by course so a wall holds its shape without mortar, while veneer-grade stone faces a block wall with the look of solid stone.

What Masons Know

  • Set a level base course. The first row of stone sets the whole wall. Dig a shallow trench, level it, and seat the base stones flat so every course above stacks true.
  • Batter the wall back into the slope. Lean each course slightly toward the hill, about 1 inch back per foot of height. The batter lets the wall hold the load instead of tipping out over time.
  • Keep the heaviest stone low. Place the biggest, flattest stones in the base courses and work up to smaller stone near the top. A heavy base gives the wall its stability.
  • Provide drainage behind the wall. Backfill with drain rock and run a perforated pipe at the base so water has somewhere to go. Trapped water is the main reason stone walls fail.
  • Cap with flat stones. Finish the top course with broad, flat stones for a clean, stable cap that sheds water and gives the wall a deliberate, finished edge.
  • Buy by the ton and ask about coverage. Wall rock sells by weight in 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 lb tiers. Coverage depends on wall height and stone size, so call with your dimensions and we'll help you size the order.

FAQ

Wall rock is flatter, broken stone meant to stack into walls and veneers course by course. Boulders are larger, rounded or irregular single stones used as accents, for terracing, or to anchor a feature. Many projects use both, with boulders for scale and wall rock for the stacked courses.
Wall rock sells by the ton, and coverage depends on the height and length of the wall plus the size of the stone. There's no single coverage number that fits every wall, so call (800) 215-7372 with your wall dimensions and we'll help you estimate the tonnage.
Dry-stack walls are built by stacking stone without mortar, relying on weight, fit, and batter to stay put. They drain freely and have a natural, rustic look. Mortared walls bond the stone with mortar for a rigid wall, but need a footing and proper drainage. Wall rock works for both.
A dry-stacked garden wall is generally kept low, around 2 to 3 feet, with a good batter and a heavy base. Taller retaining walls that hold back real load often need engineering, a footing, or a mortared build. When in doubt, ask a contractor before going tall.
Low garden walls, raised planters, and accent walls are DIY-friendly with a level base, a batter back into the slope, and patience fitting stones. Tall retaining walls that hold back a slope are best left to a contractor. Call (800) 215-7372 with your project and we'll point you the right way.
