Common Uses for Stone Veneer

From exterior facades to fireplace surrounds and column wraps, see where thin natural stone veneer earns its place on a wall.

Exterior Facades & Siding

Exterior Facades & Siding

Thin stone veneer wraps an exterior wall in real natural stone at a fraction of the weight of full-bed stone. It mortars over a prepared scratch coat, so you get the look of solid masonry without a stone foundation. A clean choice for home fronts, garden walls, and entry features.

Fireplace Surrounds

Fireplace Surrounds

Stone veneer turns a plain firebox into a focal wall. The thin profile fits tight to the surround and runs floor to ceiling without overloading the framing. Pair a stacked cleft face with a clean hearth for an indoor or outdoor fireplace that anchors the room.

Accent & Feature Walls

Accent & Feature Walls

A single veneered wall adds texture and depth to an entry, a stairwell, or a patio backdrop. Snapped-face stone reads rugged and natural, so it stands out against smooth stucco or painted drywall. Use it where you want one surface to carry the design.

Outdoor Kitchens & Islands

Outdoor Kitchens & Islands

Wrap a barbecue island or bar in stone veneer to match it to the rest of the hardscape. The thin stone holds up outdoors and reads as solid masonry around the cook space. Corner pieces wrap the ends so the island looks built from full stone on every side.

Wainscot & Column Wraps

Wainscot & Column Wraps

A waist-high band of stone veneer dresses the base of a wall, a porch skirt, or a fence line. Wrap structural columns and pillars with corner pieces for a finished masonry look. Wainscot and wraps use the most corners, so plan corner footage alongside the flats.

Stone Veneer Buying Guide

Pick the right face and profile, learn substrate and corner tips, and find the look that works for your wall.

Stone veneer is real natural stone cut thin so it mortars onto a prepared wall and gives the look of solid masonry without a stone foundation. We carry flat veneer for wall fields and corner pieces for outside corners and column wraps, in cleft and snapped faces.

Pair veneer walls with ledgestone for a stacked look, and measure corners in linear feet alongside the wall field.

What Masons Know

  • Prep a clean, stable substrate. Stone veneer bonds to a sound surface with a scratch coat or approved backer. Loose, dusty, or flexing walls cause veneer to crack or fall, so start with a solid base.
  • Install corners first, then flats. Set the corner pieces along the edges before filling the field with flat veneer. Working in from the corners keeps the coursing even and the joints consistent across the wall.
  • Mix from several crates for color blend. Natural stone varies crate to crate. Pull pieces from a few open crates as you go so the finished wall reads blended instead of patchy.
  • Back-butter for full contact. Spread mortar on both the wall and the back of each stone so there are no voids behind the veneer. Full contact is what keeps the stone bonded long term.
  • Seal in wet climates. A breathable masonry sealer helps natural veneer shed water and resist staining in areas with heavy rain or freeze. Let the install cure before sealing.
  • Order corners by linear foot and flats by face area. Measure the outside corners in linear feet and the wall field in square feet, then order each separately. Add waste for cuts so you are not short mid-wall.

FAQ

Thin stone veneer is real natural stone cut to a slim profile so it mortars onto a prepared wall without a stone foundation. Full-bed stone is heavier and needs a footing or ledge to carry its weight. Veneer gives the same masonry look with far less structure. Browse the full stone veneer collection to compare.
Measure the wall field in square feet for the flat veneer, then measure the outside corners in linear feet for the corner pieces. Subtract any window and door openings from the field, and add roughly 10 percent for cuts and waste. Order flats and corners separately so each comes out right.
Yes. Stone veneer is a common choice for indoor and outdoor fireplace surrounds because the thin profile fits tight to the firebox and runs floor to ceiling without overloading the framing. Follow local clearance requirements around the firebox opening, and pair it with ledgestone if you want a stacked look.
Yes. The same natural veneer works on interior accent walls, fireplace surrounds, and column wraps as well as exterior facades, outdoor kitchens, and garden walls. For exterior or wet locations, prep a sound substrate and seal the stone once it cures.
A handy DIYer can veneer a small accent wall or column with the right substrate prep, mortar, and patience. Larger facades and fireplace surrounds are usually better left to a mason so the substrate, corners, and coursing come out right. Call (800) 215-7372 with your wall size and we'll help you plan it.
