Common Uses for Landscape Rock

From ground cover beds to dry creek beds and desert gardens, see where decorative rock earns its place in a landscape.

Ground Cover Beds

Ground Cover Beds

A 2" to 3" layer of decorative rock around shrubs, trees, and planting beds replaces mulch with a clean surface that never breaks down. The rock holds its color, keeps weeds down over fabric, and stays put in wind and rain. A low-maintenance finish that looks good year round.

Dry Creek Beds & Drainage

Dry Creek Beds & Drainage

Larger rock fills the channel of a dry creek bed and carries real runoff during heavy rain. The size and weight keep the rock in place when water moves through, and the natural color reads like a streambed that has been there for years. Pair sizes for depth and texture.

Slopes & Erosion Control

Slopes & Erosion Control

Heavier rock holds a slope or bank where soil wants to wash away. The weight resists movement, and the surface slows water before it can cut channels. For steeper banks and waterways, step up to larger cobble or rip rap. A practical fix that still looks finished.

Desert & Xeriscape Gardens

Desert & Xeriscape Gardens

Warm-toned landscape rock is the backbone of a low-water desert garden. Spread it as the ground plane, set a few boulders for structure, and plant cacti or succulents through it. No irrigation needed for the rock itself, and the color stays true through dry summers.

Around Trees & Shrubs

Around Trees & Shrubs

A ring of decorative rock around a tree or shrub keeps mowers and string trimmers away from the trunk and gives the planting a tidy frame. The rock lets water through to the roots and does not pile up against the bark like mulch can. Clean, durable, and easy to maintain.

Accent & Borders

Accent & Borders

A band of colorful landscape rock along a walkway, driveway, or bed edge gives a yard a finished line. Use a contrasting color to set off green foliage or a darker rock to ground a bright planting. A little goes a long way, so accent strips are an easy weekend project.

Landscape Rock Buying Guide

Pick the right color and size, learn placement and edging tips, and find the look that works for your landscape.

Landscape rock is decorative natural stone that finishes a yard with clean, lasting color. We carry it in colors and sizes for every job, from fine top dressing around trees and shrubs to chunky cobble for dry creek beds and slopes. Unlike mulch, landscape rock never decomposes and holds its color for years.

Browse the full landscape rock collection across every color and size. Order by the bag for small accent jobs or by the ton for beds, paths, and creek beds. The table below pairs each size with the projects it does best.

What Landscapers Know

  • Lay landscape fabric underneath. Commercial-grade weed barrier keeps soil from migrating up into the rock and stops weeds from finding daylight through it. It also keeps the rock cleaner over time.
  • 2" to 3" is the right depth for ground cover. Less and the soil and fabric show through, more and the rock starts to shift underfoot. A consistent depth reads clean and stays in place.
  • Edge with steel, stone, or boulders. Loose rock spreads if it has nowhere to stop. Steel landscape edging, concrete bands, or placed boulders all hold the line clean and keep rock out of the lawn.
  • Rock darkens when wet. Most decorative rock deepens in color after rain or watering, then lightens again as it dries. Mist a sample after delivery to preview the wet look before you commit to the whole yard.
  • Match the size to the job. Use smaller rock for ground cover and top dressing, medium rock for beds and borders, and larger cobble for dry creek beds and slopes. The size table above pairs each range with the work it does best.
  • Buy by the right unit. Landscape rock comes in samples, 1/2 cubic foot bags, and 1,000 to 2,000 lb bulk. Small accent jobs want bags, while beds, paths, and creek beds are cheaper by the ton. Use the calculator at the top to size your order.

FAQ

Landscape rock usually means the larger, more decorative natural stones used for beds, accents, and dry creek beds, where color and size matter most. Landscape gravel is the smaller, more uniform crushed or screened material used for paths, driveways, and broad ground cover. Many projects use both together.
Use the coverage calculator at the top of this page. As a quick rule, 1 cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, and landscape rock weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Enter your area and depth and the calculator gives you the bags or tons to order.
No. Unlike bark or mulch, landscape rock does not decompose, fade quickly, or blow away. With landscape fabric underneath, a properly installed rock bed can last decades with just an occasional rake or top-up if it shifts or thins out.
For decorative ground cover, 2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. It fully covers the soil and fabric without shifting underfoot. Dry creek channels and drainage areas can go deeper, and larger cobble naturally sits a bit thicker. Keep the depth consistent for a clean, finished surface.
Yes. Beds, tree rings, accent strips, and small creek beds are all DIY-friendly with a wheelbarrow, rake, edging, and landscape fabric. For larger areas or projects that need boulder placement, you may want a landscape contractor or our delivery team. Call (800) 215-7372 with your zip and project size for guidance.
