Common Uses for Masonry & Concrete

From retaining walls and screen walls to barriers, footings, and paver finishing, see where block, cement, and concrete do their work.

Retaining & Garden Walls

Retaining & Garden Walls

Stack concrete block to hold back a slope or raise a garden bed to a comfortable height. Set the first course on a level footing and build up from there. The result is a clean, durable wall that frames planting areas and keeps soil where you want it.

Decorative Screen Walls

Decorative Screen Walls

Breeze block builds an airy wall that filters light and air while still giving privacy. Use it to divide a patio, screen a side yard, or add a mid-century accent to a courtyard. The open pattern casts shifting shadows through the day.

Planters & Raised Beds

Planters & Raised Beds

Planter wall block stacks into raised beds and freestanding planters without mortar. Build a square bed for vegetables or a low border around a tree. The block holds soil cleanly and gives a finished masonry edge to growing areas.

Barriers & Bunkers

Barriers & Bunkers

Concrete barriers and bunker block handle the heavy jobs. Use K-rail and Jersey barriers for traffic control and site security, and bunker block to wall off material bins or storage bays. Order by the piece and have it delivered and placed.

Foundations & Footings

Foundations & Footings

Cement and anchoring mixes set the base under walls, posts, and slabs. Mix in small batches, pour into a level form, and let it cure before you build on top. A solid footing is what keeps a finished wall straight and crack-free over the years.

Paver Joints & Finishing

Paver Joints & Finishing

Polymeric sand fills the joints between pavers and stone, then hardens with a light mist of water to lock everything in place. It resists weeds, holds against rain, and keeps a patio or walkway tight. The finishing step that makes paver work last.

What Masons Know

  • Set block on a level footing. A compacted, level base under the first course keeps the whole wall straight. Take your time getting the bottom row right and the rest follows.
  • Reinforce tall walls with rebar and grout. Anything above a couple of courses should have vertical rebar set in the cores and filled with grout to tie the wall together and hold against pressure from the soil behind it.
  • Breeze block makes airy screen walls. The open pattern gives privacy while still letting light and air through. Use it where a solid wall would feel heavy or block a breeze.
  • Activate polymeric sand with a light mist. Sweep it into paver joints, then water gently so it sets without washing out. A heavy spray floats the sand out of the joints, so keep it light.
  • Order barriers by the piece with delivery. K-rail, Jersey barriers, and bunker block are heavy and need equipment to set. Order the count you need and have our team deliver and place them.
  • Mix cement in small batches. Cement starts curing as soon as it is wet, so mix only what you can place before it stiffens. Smaller batches keep the work clean and the footing strong.

FAQ

It depends on the block size and style. Decorative CMU and wall block ship by the pallet with the piece count noted on each product. Check the product page for the exact count, or call us with your wall dimensions and we'll figure out how many pallets you need. Browse the full masonry collection to compare.
Breeze block is an open-pattern concrete block used to build screen walls and patio dividers. It gives privacy while still letting light and air pass through, and the pattern casts shifting shadows through the day. It is a classic mid-century look that pairs well with pavers and modern hardscapes.
K-rail, Jersey barriers, and bunker block are ordered by the piece and delivered by truck with the equipment to set them in place. They are too heavy to move by hand, so plan for delivery and placement together. Tell us how many you need and where they go and we'll handle the logistics.
Polymeric sand fills the joints between pavers and stone, then hardens when you mist it with water. It locks the pavers in place, resists weeds, and holds up against rain so a patio or walkway stays tight. It is the finishing step on most paver installs.
It depends on the footing size and how many posts or courses you're setting. Cement is sold by the bag, and most footings take more than first-timers expect. Call (800) 215-7372 with your project dimensions and we'll help you figure out how many bags to order.
