Common Uses for Fabric & Underlayment

From under rock beds to gopher protection and drainage, see where weed barrier, filter fabric, and wire earn their place in a project.

Under Gravel & Rock

Under Gravel & Rock

Lay woven weed barrier under decomposed granite, gravel, and landscape rock so the stone stays on top and the weeds stay out. The fabric keeps your base separated from the soil below so the surface does not sink or mix over time. It is the single best step for a rock bed that still looks clean years later.

Gopher & Mole Protection

Gopher & Mole Protection

Line the bottom of raised beds, lawns, and new plantings with galvanized gopher wire to stop burrowing pests from coming up through the roots. The wire mesh lets roots and water pass while keeping gophers and moles out of the bed. Install it once during the build and it protects the planting for years.

Paver & Hardscape Base

Paver & Hardscape Base

A layer of woven fabric between the subsoil and your road base keeps the two from mixing under a paver patio, walkway, or driveway. That separation holds the base tight so the surface stays level and firm under load. Use it on any hardscape where you want the base to last.

Drainage & French Drains

Drainage & French Drains

Wrap a French drain or perforated pipe in filter fabric so water flows in but soil and silt stay out. The fabric keeps the drain rock from clogging so the line keeps moving water for the long haul. It is the difference between a drain that works for a season and one that works for decades.

Planting Beds

Planting Beds

Roll weed fabric across a planting bed, then cut neat holes for each plant before topping with mulch or bark. The barrier keeps weeds down between plants while still letting water and air reach the roots. You spend far less time pulling weeds and the bed stays tidy through the season.

Securing Fabric

Securing Fabric

Pin every roll of fabric or wire down with galvanized soil staples so wind, foot traffic, and settling do not lift it. Drive a staple every few feet along the seams and edges to keep the layer flat and in place. A well-pinned install stays put while you spread rock or backfill on top.

Fabric & Underlayment Buying Guide

Pick the right fabric or wire for the job, learn placement and pinning tips, and find the product that keeps your project clean for years.

Fabric and underlayment are the layers you never see that decide how long a landscape lasts. We carry woven weed barrier for under rock and beds, non-woven filter fabric for drains, gopher wire for raised beds and lawns, and galvanized staples to pin it all down.

Browse the full fabric and wire collection across every type. Not sure which to use? The table below pairs each product with the jobs it does best.

Fabric Types vs Use

ProductBest ForUseLifespanCost
Weed Barrier Fabric Under gravel, rock, and decomposed granite; planting beds Block weeds, keep rock separated from soil Years under rock; seasons in beds $$
Filter Fabric French drains, drain rock, drainage layers Let water pass, keep soil and silt out Decades when buried $$
Hardscape Fabric Under paver and walkway base, driveways Separate base from subsoil under load Long-term under hardscape $$$
Gopher Wire Raised beds, lawns, new plantings Stop burrowing pests from below Years buried under the bed $$$
Pair fabric with the right base and ground materials above and below for a build that holds firm and drains well.

What Landscapers Know

  • Overlap fabric seams by 6 inches. Where two rolls meet, lap one over the other by at least 6 inches so weeds and soil cannot find a gap to push through.
  • Pin it with soil staples every few feet. Drive a galvanized staple along the edges and seams so wind and foot traffic do not lift the fabric while you work on top of it.
  • Use woven fabric under gravel, filter fabric for drainage. Woven weed barrier holds up under rock and traffic, while non-woven filter fabric lets water pass into a drain while keeping soil out. Match the fabric to the job.
  • Install gopher wire under raised beds and lawns. Line the bottom of the bed with wire mesh before you fill it. Roots and water pass through while gophers and moles stay out for the life of the planting.
  • Cut neat holes around plants. In a planting bed, slit an X over each plant location and tuck the flaps back so the plant breathes while the rest of the bed stays covered and weed-free.
  • Choose commercial-grade for long life. Heavier woven and galvanized products cost a little more but last far longer under rock and soil than thin landscape-store fabric. Buy once for a job you will not redo.

FAQ

Use a woven weed barrier under gravel, landscape rock, and decomposed granite. It blocks weeds and keeps the stone separated from the soil so the bed stays clean and does not sink. Browse the full fabric and wire collection to compare.
Woven weed fabric is built to block weeds and hold up under rock and traffic. Non-woven filter fabric is made to let water pass while keeping soil and silt out, which is what you want around a French drain or drain rock. Pick the one that matches the job.
If gophers or moles are active in your yard, line the bottom of raised beds, lawns, and new plantings with galvanized wire mesh during the build. It lets roots and water pass while keeping burrowing pests out, and it protects the planting for years. Pair it with quality garden soils in the bed.
Buried under rock or used around a drain, commercial-grade fabric can last many years to decades. In an open planting bed it works for several seasons before sun and disturbance wear it down. Heavier woven and galvanized products last the longest.
Lay woven weed barrier, overlap the seams, pin it with soil staples, and top it with rock or mulch. Done right, the bed stays low-weed for years with just occasional spot pulling. Call (800) 215-7372 with your project size for guidance.
