Gold Quartz is an Idaho quartzite with streaks of dark gold and grey running across a silver white background. The pieces come out of the quarry unusually smooth and flat, and that is what makes them one of the best seating stones ESR carries. A flat quartzite boulder is comfortable to sit on in a way a rounded granite boulder is not.
There is a durability argument too. Quartzite will not fracture or break up even under extreme cold, so these hold up as bench stones at schools and public facilities where the stone gets used hard and is never brought inside for winter. The same material is also produced as slabs and refined down to Select and Patio grade flagstone. Available in 12" to 18" through 36" to 48" and hand selected specimens, sold by the pound.
