Common Uses for Landscape Gravel

From driveways and pathways to drainage and parking pads, see where crushed and decorative gravel does the most work in a landscape.

Driveways

Driveways

Crushed landscape gravel packs into a firm, all-weather driveway that handles cars, trucks, and rain without rutting. A 3" to 4" layer over a compacted base gives you a durable surface that drains well and is far cheaper than concrete or asphalt. Angular gravel locks together and stays put under traffic.

Pathways & Walkways

Pathways & Walkways

Smaller gravel makes a clean, walkable path through gardens, side yards, and between beds. Set it over a compacted base with edging to hold the line and the surface drains quickly after rain. Decorative colors turn a simple walkway into a finished design feature.

Ground Cover

Ground Cover

A 2" to 3" layer of landscape gravel replaces mulch with a clean stone surface that never decomposes or blows away. Use it around shrubs, trees, and beds for a low-maintenance look that holds color year after year. Decorative gravel colors complement both modern and traditional yards.

Drainage & Dry Wells

Drainage & Dry Wells

Gravel is the workhorse of yard drainage. Fill French drains, dry wells, and trench bottoms with clean 3/4" to 1" gravel so water moves freely and does not pool. The open spaces between angular stones carry runoff away from foundations and low spots.

Dog Runs & Pet Areas

Dog Runs & Pet Areas

Gravel makes a clean, drainable surface for dog runs and pet areas that rinses off easily and never turns to mud. Choose a smoother, smaller gravel that is comfortable on paws and set it over a compacted base with edging. Quick to hose down and simple to keep tidy.

RV & Parking Pads

RV & Parking Pads

Compactable gravel builds a solid pad for RVs, trailers, and extra parking without the cost of paving. Layer it over a graded base, compact it down, and you get a firm surface that drains and holds weight. Edge the pad to keep the gravel contained over time.

Landscape Gravel Buying Guide

Pick the right size and type, learn driveway and drainage tips, and find the gravel that works for your project.

Landscape gravel is loose crushed or rounded stone that builds driveways, paths, drainage, and clean ground cover. We carry compactable crushed gravel for driveways and pads, free-draining gravel for French drains and dry wells, and decorative colors for top dressing and accent beds.

Browse the full landscape gravel collection across every size and color. We sell it by the bag for small jobs and in 1,000 to 2,000 lb bulk for driveways and beds. Not sure which to use? The table below pairs each size with the projects it does best.

Gravel Sizes vs Use Cases

MaterialBest ForCompactionDrainageCost
3/8" Minus (Crushed) Driveways, compacting pads, firm walkable surfaces Excellent Good $$
3/8"–3/4" Pathways, walkways, general ground cover Good Excellent $$
3/4"–1" French drains, dry wells, trench drainage None (drainage) Excellent $$
Decorative Colors Top dressing, accent beds, designer ground cover Light (decorative) Excellent $$
Build the right base under driveways and pads, and edge with steel or stone to keep gravel in place.

What Landscapers Know

  • Use compactable crushed gravel for driveways. Angular crushed gravel locks together and packs into a firm surface. Smooth, rounded gravel is better left for drainage and decorative beds where it does not need to hold weight.
  • Build driveways at 3" to 4" deep over a base. A graded, compacted base under the gravel keeps the surface from rutting and spreads the weight of vehicles. Skip the base and the gravel will sink and wander.
  • Edge to keep gravel contained. Steel landscape edging, concrete bands, or placed stone hold gravel along paths, beds, and pads. Without an edge, gravel migrates into the lawn and thins out over time.
  • Lay landscape fabric under decorative gravel. Commercial-grade weed barrier stops soil from working up into the gravel and keeps weeds from finding daylight. Skip it under drainage gravel where you want water moving through.
  • Gravel color darkens when wet. Dry gravel reads lighter than the installed look after rain or watering. Mist a sample after delivery to preview the wet color before you commit to a whole bed.
  • Buy by the right unit and use the calculator. Gravel comes in samples, 1/2 cubic foot bags, and 1,000 to 2,000 lb bulk. Small jobs want bags, while driveways and beds are cheaper by the ton. Use the calculator at the top to size your order.

FAQ

Landscape gravel is loose crushed or rounded stone used for driveways, drainage, and ground cover. Decomposed granite is a finer, compactable material that packs into a firm, smooth path or patio surface. Use gravel where you want a stony, free-draining surface and decomposed granite where you want a tighter, walkable one.
Use the coverage calculator at the top of this page. As a quick rule, 1 cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Landscape gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so the calculator converts your area and depth into both cubic yards and tons.
Crushed gravel, often sold as a minus product with fines, compacts into a firm driveway surface that holds vehicle weight. Smooth, rounded gravel does not lock together and will shift under traffic. For a driveway, choose crushed gravel and set it over a compacted base.
Plan on 3 to 4 inches of gravel over a graded, compacted base. The base spreads the load and keeps the gravel from sinking, and the gravel layer gives you the firm, draining surface. Edge the driveway so the gravel stays put over time.
Yes. Paths, beds, drainage trenches, and small pads are all DIY-friendly with a wheelbarrow, rake, edging, and landscape fabric. For driveways and larger pads that need a graded base and compaction, you may want a contractor or our delivery team. Call (800) 215-7372 with your zip and project size for guidance.
