A pond pump is the one component that runs constantly, so it decides both how the feature sounds and what it costs to own. Size it by the flow you need at the height you are lifting, not by the rated flow at zero head.

How do I size a pond pump?

Two numbers decide it. The first is head, the vertical lift from the water line to the point where water re-enters the feature, plus the friction of the pipe run. The second is the flow you want at that height. What you want is the flow curve, the chart showing what a pump actually delivers as the lift increases, together with its maximum lift. Aquascape publishes both per model. A pump rated generously at zero head can be well short at the top of a tall waterfall, so read the curve at your height rather than the headline number, and call us if you cannot find it.

Solids handling or screened?

A solids handling pump is built to pass debris straight through rather than trap it on a screen. That is what you want in a skimmer box, where leaves and silt arrive at the pump by design. The AquaForce family and the PL and PN series are the solids handling models in this group. A screened or conventional pump is fine sitting in a clean basin or behind filtration, and is the usual choice on a fountain. Putting a screened pump in a skimmer is the common mistake, and it shows up as a pump that keeps losing flow.

Matching a pump to an existing system

When you are replacing rather than building, three things have to line up: the discharge size so the pump meets the pipe already in the ground, the flow so the filter is not pushed past its maximum rating, and the cord length so the pump reaches the outlet without an extension sitting in a wet skimmer. None of the three are printed on our pages today, so take them from the Aquascape documentation for the model or call us with the part number. If the old pump is still there, read its model off the housing and check the maximum flow on your filter before ordering a bigger one.

Aeration is not the same as circulation

A pump moves water. An aerator pushes air through a diffuser at the bottom of the pond and raises dissolved oxygen without adding surface current. They solve different problems. If fish are gasping at the surface on a hot night, or the pond is deep and the bottom goes still, aeration is the answer and a bigger pump is not. Aeration also keeps a gas exchange hole open in winter on some ponds. The aeration kits, compressors and diffusers in this group are sized by pond volume and depth.
