Aquascape Plant & Fish Care

Everything that keeps the living half of a pond healthy sits in this group. Aquascape fish care covers premium koi and goldfish food in several pellet sizes and seasonal formulations, fish treatments for common ailments, and pond and fish nets for handling and for clearing leaves. Plant care covers aquatic planting baskets, potting media and fertilizer tablets for lilies and marginals.

Also here is the seasonal and protective equipment: floating and submersible pond thermometers, a pond de-icer that keeps a gas exchange hole open through a freeze, protective netting for leaf fall, and heron decoys for predator pressure. Feeding rate depends on water temperature, so the thermometer is worth having before the food. The water temperature range a food or treatment is intended for is printed on the label and published by Aquascape, so read that before you buy the food.

Aquascape Plant & Fish Care buying guide

How to choose, what to check before you order, and how Aquascape orders ship.

This is the living half of a pond: food, fish treatments, nets, planting baskets and fertilizer, plus the seasonal equipment that gets a pond through leaf fall and through a freeze.

Feed by water temperature

Fish metabolism follows the water, not the calendar, which is why Aquascape formulates food for different temperature ranges and why a thermometer is worth buying before the food. Aquascape states the water temperature range each food is intended for on the label and in its documentation. Feeding a summer formulation into cold water gives the fish something they cannot process, and that ends up on the bottom as sludge for the treatments to deal with. Get a floating or submersible thermometer in the pond, read it, and follow the range on the label.

Planting in baskets, not in soil

Aquatic plants go into baskets with a heavy potting media and a gravel cap rather than loose into the pond. The basket keeps the root mass contained so a lily does not take the whole shelf, the media holds the plant down, and the gravel cap stops fish rooting the media out into the water where it clouds everything. Fertilizer goes in as tablets pushed into the media rather than as anything liquid, because a liquid feed in open water feeds the algae just as readily as it feeds the lily.

Leaf fall and predator pressure

Two problems arrive in fall. The first is leaves, and the cheapest fix by a wide margin is netting stretched over the pond before the trees drop rather than a season of skimming afterward. Every leaf that sinks becomes sludge the filter and the bacteria have to work through. The second is herons, which find a pond stocked with visible fish very quickly. Decoys work by suggesting the spot is taken, which is why they are moved periodically rather than left in one place all season.

Getting a pond through a freeze

A pond that ices over completely traps the gases produced by decomposition under the lid, which is the actual risk to fish in winter rather than the cold itself. A de-icer keeps a small opening in the ice for that exchange. It is not a pond heater and is not meant to keep the water warm. Clear as much leaf and debris out as you can before the freeze so there is less decomposing under the ice, and read the temperature guidance on any food or treatment before using it in cold water.

FAQ

Aquascape formulates food by water temperature range, and the range is printed on the label for that food. Put a thermometer in the pond and follow the label, because fish cannot process a warm water formulation in cold water.

It is the cheapest useful thing in this group. Feeding rates, treatment timing and when to stop feeding all key off water temperature rather than air temperature or the calendar.

A heron decoy suggests the spot is already taken, which is why it should be moved every so often rather than left in one place. Netting and some depth for the fish to retreat into both help as well.

If your pond ices over completely, yes. A de-icer keeps a small opening for gas exchange so the products of decomposition are not trapped under the ice. It is not a heater and does not warm the pond.

An aquatic planting basket with heavy potting media and a gravel cap. The basket contains the roots, the media holds the plant down, and the cap stops fish stirring the media into the water.

Stretch protective netting over the pond before the trees drop. It is far less work than skimming all fall, and every leaf that sinks becomes sludge the filter and the bacteria have to work through.

Fish nets are sized for handling fish without damaging them and pond nets for reaching debris, so they are different tools. Net and handle sizes vary by model and are shown under Specifications where Aquascape publishes them, so check there or call us, and match the handle to how far you have to reach.
