Flowering Shrubs
Flowering shrubs, sometimes called flowering bushes, earn a spot in the yard for seasonal color rather than year round structure, and the range here runs from winter blooming camellia to summer flowering butterfly bush. Live varieties include azalea, camellia, ceanothus, rockrose, flowering quince and butterfly bush, grown by California nurseries in 1 to 15 gallon containers. Bloom timing varies by genus, so a mix of these shrubs can carry color across most of the year rather than a single flush in spring.
Full sun bloomers such as ceanothus and rockrose need different placement than shade loving azalea and camellia, and several of these shrubs also draw bees, butterflies and hummingbirds while in flower. Some, including camellia and ceanothus, are evergreen and flower without losing structure, while butterfly bush and flowering quince drop their leaves in winter. Check the sun, water and bloom season on each product page, or see evergreen shrubs for year round structure to plant alongside the color.
