Hedge Plants
Hedge plants on this page are shrubs suited to a clipped, dense hedge or a looser screening row, including boxwood (Buxus), barberry (Berberis), camellia, abelia, ceanothus, flowering quince (Chaenomeles) and hornbeam (Carpinus), in 1 gallon to 24 inch box sizes. Most stay evergreen and hold a screen year round, while a few, including barberry and quince, are deciduous and drop their leaves for part of winter. Sun needs run from full sun to part shade, and mature height ranges from a low border to a tall, wide screen, so check both ratings before planting a row.
Boxwood and barberry take regular shearing well for a tight, formal hedge, while camellia, ceanothus and quince read better left to their natural shape as an informal screen. Several, including barberry and ceanothus, are rated cold hardy and drought tolerant, which fits inland valley and high desert yards as well as milder coastal ones.
