Granite Moss Rock

Granite moss rock is natural granite boulders that have weathered in the open long enough to grow moss and lichen on their faces. The stone underneath is granite with a rich gray to gray-black tone and settled edges, and the green and brown moss and pale lichen on top are what make moss rock boulders look like they have been in the ground for decades on the day they are set. We harvest it by hand up in the mountains. Landscapers often describe this weathered, lichen-spotted look as Sierra granite moss rock.

Granite, not lava. Much of the moss rock sold in California is reddish lava rock from the Mount Shasta area. It is attractive stone, but it is not granite. Granite moss rock has a richer gray-black tone, and it is especially well suited to central California landscapes, from Bakersfield to Sacramento. The pieces come in a mix of shapes: flatter stones, rounder boulders and angular pieces, each with a good covering of moss and lichen.

We sell granite moss rock by the ton, two ways. Pallet Boulders are loose moss boulders at $300 a ton. Wire Basket moss rock comes packed in a wire basket at $400 a ton. Pick the option, then the number of tons. Each ton is 2,000 lb, and that weight is what delivery is priced on. Moss rock for sale is often priced by the pound instead. At $300 a ton, Pallet Boulders work out to 15 cents a pound, and Wire Basket moss rock works out to 20 cents a pound, so you can compare our per-ton price with any per-pound price directly.

Plan by weight. A 2-foot granite boulder weighs roughly 500 lb, so one ton is about four of them, and a 30-inch boulder is closer to 1,000 lb, about two to a ton. Every stone is different, so treat those numbers as a guide.

Moss is alive, so treat it like a plant. Set each boulder with its mossy face toward shade or the north side and give it occasional water in summer. In full sun and dry heat moss turns brown and can fade over a season, while the lichen holds up better. How much moss stays green after installation depends on your site, and we cannot promise it will last in a hot, dry spot.
