Choosing large landscaping boulders for your yard
Most people who go looking for large landscape boulders underestimate how big the stone needs to be. Scale is judged against the house and the yard, not against the stone sitting alone at the quarry. A 12 inch cobble that looks substantial on a pallet disappears in front of a two story elevation. As a rough guide, a boulder should read from the street: 24 to 30 inches for a single family front yard, 30 to 36 inches or a specimen piece where the house is tall or the planting bed is deep.
Large landscaping rocks also change how many you need. At cobble sizes you buy a group and arrange it. At 30 inches and up, one well placed stone usually does more than three, and a cluster of oversized pieces can crowd a bed instead of anchoring it. Access decides the rest. Anything over roughly 24 inches needs a skid steer, mini excavator, or boom truck to set, which means the machine has to reach the spot.
