Thickness is what moves your tonnage most. Thinner patio-gauge stone is lighter per square foot, so a ton covers more area. Thicker standup stone weighs more per square foot and covers less. That is why two patios of identical size can need noticeably different tonnage, and why comparing cost per ton between gauges can mislead.
How much flagstone do I need?
Measure length times width for square footage. As a planning figure, one ton of patio flagstone covers roughly 80 to 120 square feet, with thin stone at the high end and thick standup stone at the low end.
