El Niño flood prep for California yards
The materials that protect a California property in a wet winter are sandbags at the openings, rip rap where water runs, concrete barriers where flow has to be pushed aside, and drain rock to move water underground. NOAA raised the odds of a very strong El Niño above 90 percent in its August 2026 update, with a 69 percent chance the event becomes the strongest since 1950. The analog winters forecasters cite, 1997 to 1998 and 2024, both brought record rain to parts of California, and the wet signal is strongest from December through March rather than in the fall. Tropical remnants reaching Southern California in September and October are the early warning; the winter storm track is the main event.
That gives a homeowner or a property manager a window. Sand, bags, rip rap, drain rock and barriers all sit in the yard at normal prices until the week a flood watch posts, when bagged sand is the first thing to sell out. Ordering a supersack of washed concrete sand now, and lining the one swale that floods every year with rip rap, costs less than the same order the night before a storm and far less than the damage.
Sandbags: how many, what sand, and how to stack them
A sandbag wall takes about 3 filled bags per running foot at one course and 6 per foot at two courses, and each bag holds 35 to 40 pounds of coarse sand. A 16 foot garage door therefore needs roughly 100 bags. Fill each bag two-thirds full so it flattens and molds into the bag beneath it, fold the open end under, point the seam upstream, and stagger the joints like brickwork. Plastic sheeting under the bottom course and up the face roughly doubles how much water the wall holds back.
Sand for sandbags has to be coarse. Washed concrete sand and fill sand pack firm and drain; fine plaster sand slumps and native soil turns to mud. Most California cities hand out empty bags before a storm but not the sand, and the sand line is the one that runs out. One 2,000 pound supersack fills about 50 bags and sets down in a driveway by forklift; a 10 ton truckload fills about 500 and covers an HOA or a small business. Two people with shovels and a funnel fill roughly 100 bags an hour.
Flood control rock: half ton, one ton and up
Rip rap is angular quarried rock, sold here by the half ton and the ton, that holds soil in place where moving water would carry it away. The 1 to 5 inch grades line a swale or a downspout splash zone, 4 to 12 inch rock armors culvert inlets, drainage channels and driveway shoulders, and 12 to 18 inch rock and granite boulders hold a creek bank or a slope toe where there is real current. One ton covers about 34 square feet at 6 inches deep, 22 at 9 inches and 17 at 12 inches. Every size goes over non-woven fabric with the largest stone keyed in below grade at the bottom, or the soil pumps up through the rock in the first season.
Barriers and blocks where a bag wall will not hold
Concrete bunker blocks and K-rail barriers do the jobs sandbags cannot: holding a cut bank, and standing up to debris in moving water. Bunker blocks, also called bin blocks, ecology blocks or deadman blocks, weigh 3,000 and 5,000 pounds and interlock into a toe wall in an afternoon. K-rail and Jersey barrier are the same sloped-face barrier under two names, and set end to end they divert sheet flow around a building or a lot entrance. Both are placed by forklift or crane and both come back out when the season ends.
Getting water underground and away from the building
Clean 3/4 inch drain rock around perforated pipe inside a filter fabric sock is what moves roof and surface water away from a foundation before it pools. The sock is the part people skip and the reason drains silt up. Keep storm drains and inlets clear as well, since a blocked inlet turns a street into the path of least resistance toward a driveway.
