Berry Plants
Berry plants for sale here are blueberries (Vaccinium) and blackberries and raspberries (Rubus), sized as 1, 2 and 3 gallon plants for a home garden bed, raised bed or large container. Southern highbush blueberry varieties such as Bluecrop, Misty, O'Neal and Sharpblue are bred for a milder winter and fruit well across most of California, while types such as Powderblue and Elliott want more winter chill to perform at their best. All berry plants here need full or part sun and consistently moist, acidic soil, closer to a rhododendron's needs than a typical California landscape shrub. See the fruit trees lineup for citrus, avocado and other edible plants to add nearby.
Blackberries and raspberries in the Rubus genus, including Ouachita, Triple Crown and Baby Cakes, are thornless types suited to a trellis or a large container, bearing on second year canes cut back after fruiting. Blueberries fruit best with two different varieties planted near each other for cross pollination, and both draw bees while in bloom. Plant blueberries in raised beds or containers filled with an acidic mix if native soil runs alkaline, common across much of California.
