Yosemite Gold River boulders are ancient river granite, commonly rusty orange, tan gold or brown, and sometimes available in grey tones. Water rounded them long before anyone quarried them, so the surfaces are smooth and warm rather than sharp, which is what gives the stone its earthy character.
That smoothness has a practical benefit worth knowing. Boulders with no sharp broken edges are considerably safer for parks, playgrounds and any area where children and people gather, which is why these get specified for public work as often as for gardens. Available in 12" to 18" through 36" to 48", sold by the pound. Bulk quarry direct stones run about 500 to 3,000 pounds and arrive with light river sediment on them; sized and specimen boulders are cleaned, sorted and palleted.
