Common Uses for Landscape Boulders

From specimen focal points to retaining walls — see where boulders carry a landscape.

Specimen Boulders as Focal Points

Specimen Boulders as Focal Points

Large feature boulders (30" and up) anchor a landscape with one statement piece. Place at front yard entries, near pools, or as the centerpiece of a planting bed where the form, color, and texture of the stone do the visual work.

Garden Accent Boulders

Garden Accent Boulders

Mid-size boulders in the 18" to 30" range break up flat planting beds and add structure between perennials and shrubs. Group three or five together at varying heights for a natural arrangement that looks like it grew there.

Water Feature Boulders

Water Feature Boulders

Boulders define ponds, dry creek beds, and waterfall surrounds. Mix sizes from 12" cobble up to 24"+ accents along the banks for the layered look of a natural creek. Larger boulders set the path; smaller stones fill the gaps.

Retaining Wall & Slope Boulders

Retaining Wall & Slope Boulders

Large boulders (24" and up) stabilize slopes and build natural-looking retaining walls without the engineered look of block walls. Stack with the heaviest pieces at the base; backfill with gravel for drainage.

Bed Edging & Natural Borders

Smaller boulders in the 8" to 18" range edge planting beds, define walkways, and separate lawn from gravel without the formal look of poured concrete or pre-cast block. Spaced or tightly fitted, they read as part of the landscape.

Drought-Tolerant Landscape Boulders

Drought-Tolerant Landscape Boulders

Boulders pair naturally with succulents, agave, and California native plants. Use them to anchor a low-water design that needs no mowing and minimal irrigation — pure structure that holds the landscape together year-round.

Landscape Boulders Buying Guide

Choose the right boulder for your project, learn placement tips, and find the perfect stones for your landscape.

Landscape boulders are the structural anchors of a great outdoor design — single stones that hold a planting bed together, define a water feature, edge a driveway, or stand alone as a sculptural focal point. Each boulder is sold individually, so you can compose exactly the arrangement your site needs.

What Landscapers Know

  • Group in odd numbers. Three or five boulders at varied heights read as a natural cluster. Pairs and even rows look manufactured.
  • Bury one-third of the boulder. Setting the bottom 30 to 40 percent into the soil makes it look like the stone was always there, not dropped on top.
  • Match the local geology. Pick boulder colors and types that complement existing stone on your property — the eye recognizes when one piece feels imported.
  • Plan equipment access. Anything over 24" typically needs a skid steer or excavator to place. Check gate widths and overhead clearances before delivery day.
  • Place water features at the lowest grade. Dry creek beds and pond surrounds need to sit where water would naturally collect, or the design fights the landscape.
  • Photograph your site first. Send photos with measurements when you order — we can recommend sizes that fit your space and help with access logistics.

FAQ

Six size classes: 8"–12", 12"–18", 18"–24", 24"–30", 30"–36", and Specimen (36" and up). Each size class is sold individually. Browse the boulder collection to see what's in stock.
Measured by their longest dimension. Pricing is per individual boulder and scales with size — a 30" specimen costs more than a 12" cobble both because of the stone itself and because larger boulders need equipment to move and place.
Smaller cobble (8"–18") can ride in a regular pickup or trailer. Anything 24" and up typically requires a flatbed or boom truck. We coordinate based on access — call (800) 215-7372 with your zip and gate widths.
Cobble up to about 18" can usually be hand-placed by two people. Anything 24" and larger generally needs a skid steer, mini-excavator, or boom truck. We can recommend local equipment rental if you don't have your own.
Yes — send photos of your site with rough measurements to our team and we'll suggest sizes and quantities. For specimen pieces, you're welcome to visit the yard and hand-pick the stones.
