What size pond filter do I need?

Two ratings decide it, and both come from Aquascape's documentation for the unit rather than from our page. The first is the pond volume the filter is rated for, in gallons. The second is the maximum flow it will take, which has to be at least what your pump delivers at your lift, or water pushes through faster than the media can work on it. Size to the pond you have, not the pond you wish you had, then confirm the plumbing size matches the pipe already in the ground. Going one size up on biological capacity is the cheap insurance; going one size up on flow rating is not.

A skimmer and a biological filter work as a pair

They are not alternatives. The skimmer is mechanical: it sits at the water line, takes floating debris before it sinks and rots, and gives the pump a housing. The BioFalls is biological: it holds media with enough surface area for bacteria to convert the waste that did make it into the water. Run only a skimmer and the water stays clear of leaves but the chemistry drifts. Run only a BioFalls and the bottom fills with debris the bacteria then have to work through. The pond kits pair them for that reason.

Wetland, bog and add-on filtration

A wetland or bog filter is a gravel bed planted through, with water pushed up from underneath so the plant roots and the gravel do the filtering. It is the quietest form of filtration and the one that looks least like equipment, which is why it suits a naturalistic pond. Add-on filters are the other direction: a unit that goes onto an existing system when the pond has outgrown its filtration or the fish load has climbed. Both are listed here with their own volume and flow ratings.

Media is a consumable

Filter mats, brushes, bioballs and media bags are listed separately from the housings on purpose, because they are the part that wears rather than the part that fails. A skimmer net and a filter mat are replaced rather than repaired, and a BioFalls that has stopped keeping up often needs media before it needs a bigger unit. Rinse media in pond water rather than tap water when you clean it, since chlorinated water kills the bacteria colony that the media exists to hold.
