This is the buried half of a water feature: EPDM liner and the underlayment that protects it, flexible pipe, valves and fittings, and the foam and sealant that make a waterfall run over the rock instead of under it.

How much pond liner do I need?

Measure the liner off the finished pond, not off the hole. You need the length and the width of the excavation at its widest points, plus enough to go down and back up the deepest section, plus an overlap at the edge to turn up behind the coping rock. Buying short is not recoverable, so err generously and trim on site. Underlayment is measured the same way and goes down first. Full rolls of liner and underlayment ship by truck and are quoted for freight before the order is placed.

Underlayment is not optional

The geotextile underlayment sits between the soil and the liner and is what stops a root, a sharp stone or a settled point from working through the EPDM over a few seasons. It is a small fraction of the liner cost and it is the cheapest insurance in the whole build, because a puncture under two tons of rock is not a repair anybody enjoys. Lay it over a cleaned excavation with the obvious stones pulled out, overlap the seams generously, and then bring the liner in over the top of it.

Size pipe from the pump, not from the fitting

The pipe diameter should follow the pump discharge and the run length, not whichever fitting happens to be in the bucket. Undersized pipe costs flow to friction the whole time the pump runs, and on a long run to the top of a waterfall that shows up as a thinner sheet than you paid for. Flexible pond pipe is easier to route than rigid and needs fewer fittings, which is fewer places to lose head. A check valve is worth fitting where the run would otherwise drain back into the skimmer every time the pump stops.

Waterfall foam and sealant

Expanding waterfall foam is what forces water to run over the rock instead of finding a path underneath it, and it is the difference between a waterfall that looks like water on stone and one that looks like a leak. It is applied behind and between the rocks as they are set, not afterward. Liner sealant and the repair supplies in this group handle seams and punctures. Both are worth having on site during the build rather than ordering after the water is in and something is obviously wrong.
