Succulents are sold by container size, which is the pot the plant is growing in rather than the plant itself. Small container stock establishes fastest and costs least; boxed specimens are years further along and go in where a design needs presence immediately.

Sizes are typical mature dimensions in ground; container plants take several seasons to reach them. For anything larger than what is listed, request a quote.

What Contractors Know

  • Plant high, not deep. Set the root ball proud of finished grade and feather top dressing up to it. Burying the crown is the most common way to lose a succulent.
  • Drainage beats watering schedule. Most losses come from heavy soil holding water at the root, not from underwatering. On clay, plant on a mound and amend wide rather than deep.
  • Space at mature width. These are bought for silhouette. Planted at shrub spacing they collide and you lose the form you paid for.
  • Acclimate nursery grown stock. Plants finished under shade cloth scorch in full desert exposure. Give them a season of afternoon shade, or plant in autumn.
  • Keep gravel off the crown. Top dressing should stop just short of the stem rather than piling against it, which traps moisture exactly where it does damage.
