Hummingbird Plants

Hummingbirds work tubular flowers, which is why aloes dominate this list. An aloe throws a spike of narrow red, orange or yellow flowers held clear of the foliage, and it does it in winter when very little else in a California yard is blooming. That timing is the real value here: it feeds Anna's hummingbirds through the months when nectar is scarce rather than adding to the summer glut.

Bloom time is listed on every product page, so you can stagger a group and keep something open from late fall through spring. Plant them where you will actually see the birds, since a spike behind the garage is wasted. These are the same drought tolerant succulents as the rest of the nursery, so they need no extra water to earn their keep, and none of them needs deadheading to rebloom the following year.
