Where White Rocks for Landscaping Work Best

Beds, pathways, pool surrounds and xeriscape ground cover, with the white grade that suits each one.

Beds, Borders & Ground Cover

Beds, Borders & Ground Cover

A 2 inch layer of white rocks for landscaping lifts a planting bed and holds a clean line against dark mulch. Angular grades such as Ultra White Rock and White Glacier Rock read brightest in full sun. Lay them over commercial fabric so soil never wicks up into the white.

Pathways & Walkways

Pathways & Walkways

White gravel rocks at 3/8 inch walk comfortably between steppers, and the compacting grades go further. White Ice D.G. packs into a firm path surface. Ultra White Pathway Fines are dolomite crusher fines rather than true decomposed granite, so they need a stabilizer mixed in to harden.

Pool Surrounds & Courtyards

Pool Surrounds & Courtyards

Himalaya White Polished Pebbles and Snow White Pebbles are tumbled smooth, which suits the places people walk barefoot. Be aware that white stones for landscaping throw real glare beside a pool in afternoon sun, and a 1 to 2 inch grade scatters the light far better than a fine one.

Xeriscape & Low Water Ground Cover

Xeriscape & Low Water Ground Cover

White landscaping stones reflect heat rather than storing it, which is why they show up in desert and drought tolerant plans. Salt N Pepper Gravel and White Glacier Rock cover open ground at 2 inches with no watering, no mowing and none of the yearly topping up that bark needs.

White Landscape Rock Buying Guide

Pick the right white grade for the job, and know what white does in sun, dust and rain before the load lands.

White landscaping rock is the brightest ground cover we sell and the one that rewards a little planning. This collection covers white gravel, white pebbles, white decomposed granite and white boulders, from a 1/4 inch fine that compacts into a path to a hand picked specimen boulder. Most grades are sold by the bag, the half ton sack, the ton or the truckload; Snow White Pebbles come by the 50 lb bag and boulders by the pound.

Browse the full white landscape rock collection for what is in stock today, and size the job with the coverage calculator at the top of this page. The table and tips below cover the decisions that decide whether a white install still looks white in two years.

White Rock Sizes vs Use Cases

MaterialBest ForCompactionDrainageCost
Ultra White Rock (3/8", 3/4") Beds, borders, bright ground cover Light (angular, locks) Excellent $$$
Salt N Pepper Gravel (3/8", 3/4", 1-1/2") Pathways, driveways, areas where marks would show Moderate Excellent $$
White Ice D.G. (1/4", 3/8" minus) Paths, patios and drives that need a firm surface Compacts firm Good $$
Snow White and Himalaya White Pebbles (3/8" to 3") Pots, courtyards, pool surrounds, decorative beds None (stays loose) Excellent $$$
Ultra White Pathway Fines (1/4" minus) Soft white paths, bunker sand, bocce base Needs a stabilizer to harden Good $$
White rock needs fabric and a clean edge underneath to stay white. See base materials and landscape fabric for what goes below, and stabilizers for the binder that hardens a fines pathway.

What Landscapers Know About White Rock

  • Lay fabric, then the rock. White shows soil faster than any other color. Commercial grade fabric under 2 inches of stone keeps mud from wicking up into the white after the first heavy rain.
  • Not every white is the same white. Salt N Pepper Gravel reads as speckled grey from a few feet away, White Ice D.G. is a soft bright white, and Ultra White Pathway Fines can carry a slight gold tint that varies load to load. Order a sample of the current material.
  • Ultra White Pathway Fines will not harden on its own. It is dolomite crusher fines, not decomposed granite. Mix in a stabilizer if you need a firm path; left plain it stays a soft surface.
  • Check your irrigation water. Iron in well water leaves rust staining on white stone that rinsing will not remove. Aim sprinkler heads away from white beds.
  • Go coarser where there is glare. A 3/4 inch or larger grade scatters light. A 1/4 inch fine beside a south facing wall or a pool deck can be genuinely hard to look at in July.
  • Blow it, do not rake it. A leaf blower on a low setting lifts leaves and dust off white rock without churning the fabric or dragging soil to the surface. See using a leaf blower on landscape rock.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Yes, in the right place. White rocks brighten a bed, contrast well against green planting and dark mulch, reflect heat instead of holding it, and never need topping up the way bark does. They are a poor choice in heavy shade, under messy trees, or on a high traffic path where every mark shows. Open, sunny ground is where white earns its keep.
Not without some upkeep. Dust settles into it, leaf litter stains it, and in damp shade or under sprinkler overspray it can green up with algae. A rinse with a hose or a pass with a leaf blower two or three times a year keeps it bright. Iron in irrigation water is the one stain that does not come out, so keep sprinkler spray off it.
Shape. White gravel rocks are crushed, so the faces are angular and the pieces lock together, which is what you want on a path, a slope or a driveway. White pebbles are tumbled round, which feels better underfoot and looks softer in a pot or a courtyard, but rolls when you walk or drive on it.
For a firm, packed path, White Ice D.G. compacts into a stable surface. Ultra White Pathway Fines make a softer white path but have to be mixed with a stabilizer to harden. For a loose decorative path, a 3/8 inch angular white gravel over fabric with a solid edge holds its line.
Measure the area in square feet and pick a depth. One ton covers about 115 square feet at 2 inches, about 75 square feet at 3 inches and about 58 square feet at 4 inches, using the 1.4 tons per cubic yard figure the coverage calculator on this page applies. Enter your own dimensions in the calculator above for the exact tonnage.
Less than dark stone. White reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it, so a white bed runs cooler than black or red rock in the same spot. The trade off is glare: next to a pool deck or a south facing wall a fine white grade can be uncomfortably bright, and a coarser size scatters the light better.
