Treatments handle the chemistry side of a pond: building the biological filter, controlling algae, digesting sludge and neutralizing chlorine on a top up. All of them are dosed by water volume, so know the pond gallons before ordering.

Dose by water volume, not by pond size

Every label on this range is written against gallons, so the first thing to get right is the pond volume. Work it out once, write it somewhere you will find it, and every treatment decision afterward becomes arithmetic. Under dosing is the common failure and it reads as a product that did not work. Over dosing wastes money and, on the fish safe products, usually does nothing worse than that, but on the ones marked otherwise it matters. Read the dose interval as well as the dose, because several of these are weekly rather than one time.

Bacteria builds the filter, clarifiers only clear the water

Beneficial bacteria is the one to treat as routine rather than as a rescue. It colonizes the media in the biological filter and converts the waste that fish and decaying plant matter put into the water, which is the actual mechanism keeping a pond stable. A clarifier does something different and much narrower: it clumps suspended particles so the filter can catch them, which fixes cloudy water without fixing why it went cloudy. Use a clarifier when you need the water clear this weekend, and bacteria so that you do not.

Algae and sludge are a load problem

Algae and bottom sludge are usually the symptom of more nutrient going into the pond than the system takes out: too much feeding, too many fish, leaf fall, or filtration that has been outgrown. The algae control products and the sludge digesters in this group deal with what is already there, and they work. They will keep having to work if the input does not change. If you are treating repeatedly, look at the filtration rating and the feeding before buying more treatment.

Fish safe, and fountain only

Not every product here goes in a pond with fish in it. The fountain treatments are formulated for decorative features without fish or plants and are labeled that way. Whether a product is safe for fish and plants is stated on the manufacturer's label and in the Aquascape documentation, so read that rather than assuming from the shelf it sits on. That matters most on the professional grade and lake sized formulations, which are concentrated for much larger bodies of water than a backyard pond.
