Sandbags, rip rap, barriers and drainage: what to buy, how much, and how to set it before the rain.

Sandbags stop water at a door, rip rap holds soil where water runs, concrete barriers divert flow, and drain rock moves water underground. Most flood damage in a California yard comes from water arriving faster than the ground can take it: a garage in a low spot, a slope that sheds a season of soil in one night, a swale that has never been lined. Each material solves a different problem, and the table below pairs the material with the job.

NOAA forecast a very strong El Niño for the 2026 to 2027 winter in its August 2026 update, with above-normal rain most likely for coastal California from December through March. That is the window to have material on site rather than in a queue.

Sandbag counts assume a standard 14 by 26 inch bag filled two-thirds full, about 35 to 40 lb each. Rip rap depth is roughly 1.5 times the largest stone.

Setting it before the storm

  • Fill sandbags two-thirds full, not to the top. A two-thirds bag weighs about 35 to 40 lb, molds into the bag beneath it and seals the wall. A full bag is round, heavy and leaves gaps.
  • Lay bags like brick, open end folded under and pointing upstream. Stagger every course and tamp each bag with a foot. Plastic sheeting under the bottom course and up the front of the wall roughly doubles how well it holds water.
  • Count before you fill. Three bags per running foot for a one-bag-high wall, six for two high, and a wall three bags high needs a base three bags wide. A single garage door usually takes 60 to 100 bags.
  • Buy sand by the supersack for a crew. One 2,000 lb supersack fills about 50 bags; a 10 ton truckload fills about 500. Many cities hand out empty bags free but not the sand, and the sand line is the one that runs out.
  • Rip rap goes on fabric, largest rock at the bottom. Key the first row in below grade at the toe of the slope or the channel bed, then build up with smaller stone. Without fabric the soil pumps up through the rock in the first season.
  • Order before the watch is issued. Bagged sand and small rip rap sell out at every yard in the county the day a flood watch posts. A supersack in the side yard costs the same in September as it does the night before the storm, if you can get it then.

A properly built wall keeps most of the water away from a door long enough to matter, and laying plastic sheeting under the bottom course and up the face of the wall roughly doubles how much it holds back. Expect seepage through and under any sandbag wall.

Untreated polypropylene bags are good for a single storm season and UV-treated bags for about a year outdoors before the fabric breaks down in sunlight. Bags that stayed clean can be dried and reused; bags that sat in floodwater should be treated as contaminated and replaced.

Sand that never contacted floodwater can be spread in the yard or kept for the next storm. Sand from bags that sat in floodwater may carry sewage or chemicals and should go to a landfill under your county guidance rather than into a garden bed. Empty bags are landfill waste, not recycling.

For anything longer than one storm, concrete bunker blocks, K-rail barriers and rip rap outlast a bag wall and need no refilling. Bunker blocks at 3,000 and 5,000 pounds build a toe wall in an afternoon, K-rail diverts sheet flow and debris that would flatten bags, and rip rap over fabric holds the slope the water is cutting into.

Work in this order: grade the soil so it falls away from the foundation, catch roof water in a French drain of 3/4 inch drain rock around perforated pipe in a filter sock, line the path it takes across the yard with rip rap so it does not cut a channel, and use K-rail or bunker blocks where sheet flow needs to be pushed around a building entirely.

Build a sandbag wall two bags high across the opening, about 6 bags per running foot, with plastic sheeting on the face. For a garage that floods every year, a permanent fix is better: regrade the apron, add a trench drain filled with 3/4 inch drain rock, and set the downspouts to discharge away from the slab.

Rip rap is angular quarried rock placed over fabric to hold soil where moving water would wash it away: creek and channel banks, culvert inlets and outlets, drainage swales, slope toes and driveway shoulders. The angular shape is the point, because the stones interlock instead of rolling like river rock.

Use 1 to 5 inch rock for swales, downspout splash zones and light slopes, 4 to 12 inch for culverts, drainage channels and driveway shoulders, and 12 to 18 inch rock or boulders where there is real current such as a creek bank or a spillway. Bigger water needs bigger rock, and the layer should be about 1.5 times the largest stone in depth.

One ton of rip rap covers roughly 34 square feet at 6 inches deep, 22 square feet at 9 inches, and 17 square feet at 12 inches. Measure length times width, pick the depth from the stone size, and run it through the coverage calculator on this page. Rip rap is sold here by the half ton and the ton.

Rip rap on this page runs about $36 to $280 per ton, with the tan and brown grades at the low end and the grey granite and specialty colors at the top. Half-ton units are priced proportionally, and truckload pricing is lower per ton than bagged or supersack quantities.

They are the same product. K-rail is the California term and Jersey barrier is the national one for the sloped-face concrete barrier used to separate traffic and close off site access. For flood work both do the same job: set end to end they divert sheet flow and debris away from a building or a lot entrance.

A concrete bunker block is a heavy interlocking block that stacks like an oversized brick, also sold as a bin block, ecology block or concrete deadman block. In flood work they build a toe wall to hold a cut bank or a diversion wall that water cannot push over, and they come apart again with a forklift when the season ends.

Get material on site before the first flood watch. Clear the drains and swales you already have, order sand and bags now rather than the night before, line the one swale that floods every year with rip rap, and put drain rock and a filter sock where roof water pools. Bagged sand is the first thing that sells out at every yard in the county once a watch posts.

El Niño flood prep for California yards

The materials that protect a California property in a wet winter are sandbags at the openings, rip rap where water runs, concrete barriers where flow has to be pushed aside, and drain rock to move water underground. NOAA raised the odds of a very strong El Niño above 90 percent in its August 2026 update, with a 69 percent chance the event becomes the strongest since 1950. The analog winters forecasters cite, 1997 to 1998 and 2024, both brought record rain to parts of California, and the wet signal is strongest from December through March rather than in the fall. Tropical remnants reaching Southern California in September and October are the early warning; the winter storm track is the main event.

That gives a homeowner or a property manager a window. Sand, bags, rip rap, drain rock and barriers all sit in the yard at normal prices until the week a flood watch posts, when bagged sand is the first thing to sell out. Ordering a supersack of washed concrete sand now, and lining the one swale that floods every year with rip rap, costs less than the same order the night before a storm and far less than the damage.

Sandbags: how many, what sand, and how to stack them

A sandbag wall takes about 3 filled bags per running foot at one course and 6 per foot at two courses, and each bag holds 35 to 40 pounds of coarse sand. A 16 foot garage door therefore needs roughly 100 bags. Fill each bag two-thirds full so it flattens and molds into the bag beneath it, fold the open end under, point the seam upstream, and stagger the joints like brickwork. Plastic sheeting under the bottom course and up the face roughly doubles how much water the wall holds back.

Sand for sandbags has to be coarse. Washed concrete sand and fill sand pack firm and drain; fine plaster sand slumps and native soil turns to mud. Most California cities hand out empty bags before a storm but not the sand, and the sand line is the one that runs out. One 2,000 pound supersack fills about 50 bags and sets down in a driveway by forklift; a 10 ton truckload fills about 500 and covers an HOA or a small business. Two people with shovels and a funnel fill roughly 100 bags an hour.

Flood control rock: half ton, one ton and up

Rip rap is angular quarried rock, sold here by the half ton and the ton, that holds soil in place where moving water would carry it away. The 1 to 5 inch grades line a swale or a downspout splash zone, 4 to 12 inch rock armors culvert inlets, drainage channels and driveway shoulders, and 12 to 18 inch rock and granite boulders hold a creek bank or a slope toe where there is real current. One ton covers about 34 square feet at 6 inches deep, 22 at 9 inches and 17 at 12 inches. Every size goes over non-woven fabric with the largest stone keyed in below grade at the bottom, or the soil pumps up through the rock in the first season.

Barriers and blocks where a bag wall will not hold

Concrete bunker blocks and K-rail barriers do the jobs sandbags cannot: holding a cut bank, and standing up to debris in moving water. Bunker blocks, also called bin blocks, ecology blocks or deadman blocks, weigh 3,000 and 5,000 pounds and interlock into a toe wall in an afternoon. K-rail and Jersey barrier are the same sloped-face barrier under two names, and set end to end they divert sheet flow around a building or a lot entrance. Both are placed by forklift or crane and both come back out when the season ends.

Getting water underground and away from the building

Clean 3/4 inch drain rock around perforated pipe inside a filter fabric sock is what moves roof and surface water away from a foundation before it pools. The sock is the part people skip and the reason drains silt up. Keep storm drains and inlets clear as well, since a blocked inlet turns a street into the path of least resistance toward a driveway.
